Yes, indeed, books containing the rites and customs of our people, almost none. One of the few academic works, if not the only, was released in 1989, Nauka, Moscow, Institute of Ethnography, USSR Academy of Sciences. And offer it in a truncated version – an introduction, the Koreans and the conclusion.

Calendar customs and ceremonies of the peoples of Eastern Asia. An annual cycle.

KOREANS

Holidays, customs and rituals associated with specific calendar dates, in the culture and life of Koreans occupy an important place. The origins of these holidays and customs are different: some are connected with work people, and others with agrarian cults and worship of nature. Some rituals, originating in the van court and in court circles of feudal Korea, under the influence of official ideology and state religion gradually became widespread among urban and rural population of the country.

At the turn of XIX-XX centuries calendar holidays Koreans represented a complex set of customs and rituals, games, entertainment, theatrical performances, religious, philosophical, aesthetic and ethical beliefs of the Korean people, attitudes that have been formed over many centuries.

Preserved evidence of ancient and early medieval Chinese authors, as well as Korean myths, legends and traditions suggest that in antiquity and at the turn of our era the festival drevnekitayski peoples had a mass character, was accompanied by songs, dances, ceremonies executed by all community members, all the people. Especially bright and, obviously, orgiastic in nature were the festivals related to the two major milestones in the life of ancient farmers – the beginning of the field work and harvest time.

The formation of statehood (in the ancient and early medieval era) was accompanied by the creation of public holidays. The entire subsequent history of calendar customs and rituals of Koreans was the interaction between official and folk rituals, which for centuries had each other significant influence. Calendar holidays were closely associated with family and community traditions. On the formation of some parties of the calendar rituals of Koreans was influenced by socio-economic, political, cultural life of the country and people, as well as the ideology of Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism. In calendar rituals of Koreans, a special place belongs to the system of ancient beliefs (shamanist in nature).

In the modern ethnographic literature it is often defined as “folk religion” or “religion of the peony” (mudan in Korean means “female shaman”) [ Han Man – yong, 1975, p. 11]. This system of ancient beliefs remained in force and significance till the middle of XX century.

In the modern times the traditional calendar customs and rituals, especially calendar holidays, began to be perceived as a form of manifestation of national culture as one of the expressions ethnic identity of the people.
